Mary’s Cakery & Candy Kitchen Celebrating 20 Sweet Years in King George County

Mary’s Cakery & Candy Kitchen, located at 10305 Indiantown Road, was founded in 1972 by Mary and James Detherage. Mary started out as a cake baker and decorator, but when experimenting to replicate a York Peppermint Patty®, Mary branched out into chocolates and confections.  With orders her husband took from work at the military base at Dahlgren, Mary and James quickly outgrew their home-based kitchen, purchasing a larger building nearby.  This facilitated their expansion and the business took off from there, making them one of the largest privately-owned specialty chocolate stores in Virginia. The shop has just celebrated 20 years in the current location and is a community feature in King George County.

Mary’s Cakery & Candy Kitchen was voted 2018’s Best Chocolatier by Virginia Living, and is a member of Virginia’s Finest® Trademark Program denoting top quality Virginia-produced and processed products that meet or exceed quality standards.

Among its offerings are custom made cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pies, and several display cases full of handmade candies.  Mary’s stocks over 25 different flavors of fudge at any given time, bulk candy barrels, gift baskets, and themed gift sets. There is also an entire room dedicated to nostalgic candies. Mary’s stock almost 4,000 chocolate molds, thus they can pour chocolate into almost any shape you want. Double-dipped chocolate covered potato chips are a current customer favorite.

Come visit and be reminded of the old-fashioned candy stores of your childhood at Mary’s Cakery & Candy Kitchen.
